Hybrid vs. Plug-in Hybrid - What’s the Difference?

2022 INFINITI Q50 Hybrid

Do skyrocketing gas prices have you thinking about making the switch to hybrid cars like the INFINITI Q50, but you’re confused about the difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles? That’s OK, a lot of Los Angeles drivers are in the same boat. We’ve put together a detailed hybrid vs. plug-in hybrid comparison to explain the difference.

The Difference Between Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

The major difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars is given away by their names – plug-in hybrid vehicles are charged by plugging them into an outlet, while hybrid vehicles do not need to be plugged in, and, in fact are not able to be plugged in. Not having to charge a vehicle is the more convenient option as charging a battery to full capacity can take hours. Here are the differences:

  • Plug-in hybrids can run solely on the electric motor for a short range, while the gas engine and electric motor in a hybrid are always running simultaneously.
  • The battery in a hybrid like the INFINITI Q50 is charged by the gas engine, while the battery in a plug-in hybrid has to be charged from an outlet or charger.

Hybrid vs. Plug-in Hybrid – Cost

Hybrid vehicles are usually priced within reach of more Glendale drivers than plug-in hybrids. The lower MSRP is largely due to the large, extra battery pack that comes in plug-in hybrid vehicles. However, most drivers find hybrids to be quite affordable.

Hybrid vs. Plugin Hybrid – Gas Mileage

Driving either type of vehicle will result in significantly fewer trips to Downey gas stations. But plug-in hybrids generally have better gas mileage when their electric ranges are factored in. Depending on their electric ranges, some plug-in hybrids can reach the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon. There are other factors to consider, of course. Electricity is not free, after all. Whether you charge your plug-in hybrid from your home or a public charger, you will be paying for that power.

Hybrid vs. Plugin Hybrid – Horsepower

There is a difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrid when it comes to horsepower. Plug-in hybrids typically deliver more horsepower than hybrids, thanks to their larger batteries. However, hybrids are rarely lacking for power and generate enough horsepower to get the job done.
