Who Makes INFINITI?

2022 INFINITI QX80

INFINITI is a luxury automotive brand with Japanese origins. INFINITI traces its origins back to the year 1985, at which time, parent company Nissan developed a top secret “Horizon Task Force,” with the objective of creating a new performance luxury brand. Though many Glendale and Downey car shoppers visit INFINITI of Downtown LA for luxury cars daily, they may not know a lot about the history of this brand. So, if you’d like to learn more about who owns INFINITI and makes INFINITI cars, then keep reading! Don’t hesitate to call us at 213-927-5029 or contact us online with questions in the meantime.

Who Owns INFINITI?

Luxury automaker INFINITI is owned by Japanese manufacturing company, Nissan Motor Co. In 1987, INFINITI was named, and the luxury brand was born. To evoke the feeling of moving forward, a badge was designed to show two central lines stretching into the horizon. In November of 1989, the brand officially launched. The INFINITI Q Series came first to Van Nuys drivers.

Where Are INFINITI Vehicles Made?

Nissan HQ is located in Japan, but most INFINITI models are manufactured and sold in the United States. While the INFINITI brand has created various models since its inception, the current models sold in the United States are:

Sedans:

  • Q50
  • Q70, formally known as the INFINITI M sedan
  • Q70L

Coupes:

  • Q60, formally known as the INFINITI G37 coupe and cabrio models

Crossovers and SUVs:

  • QX30
  • QX50, formally known as the INFINITI EX and FX crossover
  • QX60
  • QX80

Why did INFINITI start? In the late eighties, American consumers had increasingly begun switching away from American luxury brands like Buick, Cadillac, and Lincoln, in favor of German rivals like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. But these vehicles were expensive, and many Americans were looking for serene-riding luxury vehicles wanted more for less.

Brands like INFINITI, Acura (owned by Honda), and Lexus (owned by Toyota) cropped up in response. That having been said, INFINITI has always been an unpretentious brand with a performance bent, perhaps more so than Acura or Lexus, even. INFINITI cars — and now SUVs — boast strong performance, sophisticated interiors, and innovative features.
